Elder Care, Crisis, Dementia Planning, and Guardianship Actions

Caring for Those Who Took Care of Us

While the golden years can be characterized by the joys of retirement, time spent with grandchildren, and long-awaited travel, as time passes, those years can also be touched by deteriorating health and financial concerns. The compassionate team at HighPoint Law Offices can help you address and solve these problems.

Elder Care

Elder care planning involves preparing for the overall care and support of older adults, including addressing medical, financial, and personal needs as they age including estate planning, asset protection and Medicaid planning.

Long-Term Care Planning

The increasing cost of long-term care has made it critical to start planning as soon as possible. Long-term care costs often exceed $14,000 per month and can quickly deplete your assets. Although long-term care insurance is a major help, there are additional steps that can be taken to protect assets from having to be spent down for care.

Crisis Planning

Crisis planning involves preparing for and managing sudden, unexpected events or emergencies that impact an individual’s health, safety, or financial stability. We focus on developing strategies for quick action in case of a medical emergency, sudden illness, or unexpected change in circumstances, ensuring that important documents like health care proxies, and financial powers of attorney are in place and accessible and that assets are properly protected.

Guardianship Actions

Unfortunately, life is unpredictable and sometimes we are confronted with a crisis that requires court intervention. When people are unable to manage their own affairs due to age, illness or disability, court intervention may be necessary. A guardianship proceeding is a court process where a judge appoints a guardian to make decisions for someone who can no longer make decisions for themselves. There are two types of guardians:

  • Guardian of the Person is a court-appointed individual responsible for making decisions related to the personal physical well-being of the person under the guardianship. The guardian can make decisions about medical treatment, healthcare providers, daily care and living arrangements.
  • Guardian of the Estateis a court-appointed individual responsible for managing and overseeing the financial affairs and assets of the person under the guardianship.

Veterans Elder Care Benefits

Veterans may qualify for benefits that help offset the cost of long-term care. The Aid and Attendance Benefit can help a veteran remain at home or more easily pay for needed care.

If you are or know a veteran, we will help you identify and apply for Aid and Attendance Benefit to give you the care and the dignified life you deserve.
